Chamberlain Leads Welsh Youths Bid

Ben Chamberlain will spearhead a record number of players entering this year’s Welsh Open Youths Championship to be played at Whitchurch (Cardiff) Golf Club.

More than 170 golfers from nine countries are taking part. The strength of the field is highlighted by more than 50 of the players, all aged 21 or under, having handicaps of scratch or better.

Ashton Bradbury, Chairman of the Championships Committee for the Golf Union of Wales said: “The Youths Championship is one of the highlights in our season and we are delighted to be able to bring the event to Whitchurch.

“The championship continues to grow in stature as highlighted by the strength of the field this year.”

The Welsh challenge will be led by Chamberlain, a two-time winner of the Welsh Boys Championship. All of the Welsh National U21 squad will be playing in the event including Elis Lewis, runner up in the 2015 Welsh Amateur Championship, Rhys Jones, from nearby Mountain Ash, and Tom Froom from Nefyn.

The Welsh players will by no means have it all their own way, however, with the usual strong entry from English players set to make a strong challenge and a number of entrants from further afield all looking to make their mark.

Whitchurch (Cardiff) Golf Club Manager Mike Perry said, “We have a long history of hosting top level events at our club and we are very much looking forward to welcoming all the players to Whitchurch.

“Our course will provide a good test for everyone and the player coming out on top at the end of the championship will without doubt be a worthy winner.”

The 72 hole event starts on Friday 27th May. The top 45 players and ties after day 2 go through to play 36 holes on Sunday 29th May, with the leaders expected to tee off in their final round at around 1pm.

Visitors are welcome to come and watch some of the best young amateur golfers compete for the Welsh Open Youths Title.

Founded in 1914 and located on the outskirts of Cardiff, Whitchurch is one of the best inland courses in Wales, renowned for its fast greens and excellent all-round condition.
