Former defender David Hughes is determined to increase the numbers of local players who graduate to Cardiff City’s first team after being appointed Academy Head of Coaching.

The 42-year-old will oversee the Bluebirds entire Academy coaching department across all age groups from Under9s to U23.

Hughes, who made 17 appearances for City after joining from Shrewsbury in 2001, will also work with the first-team staff to help younger players progress to the senior squad.

“This is a very exciting opportunity, because Cardiff City has an important place in my heart,” said Wrexham-born Hughes.

“I started my coaching journey here over 15 years ago, so to come back having learned from other organisations and talented individuals is fantastic.

“Fundamentally, my role is going to be about looking at coach and player development and aligning phases and pathways to ensure that we’re giving our exciting, local talent a route that ends with a senior debut.

“Success is gauged by seeing those young players running out on the pitch in that scenario, at ease in their new surroundings.

“Individual development and progression is central to the club’s long-term success.”

Hughes has joined City having worked in youth coaching at Shrewsbury, Watford, Aston Villa and most recently Southampton where he was Head of Academy Player development.

Earlier this month former manager Neil Warnock criticised City’s Academy programme.

Warnock said: “I was criticised a little bit at Cardiff about the Under-23s.

“But they just weren’t good enough to get in the first team and I don’t think they will be in the next few years.”

City’s Head of Academy, James McCarthy, added: “This is a hugely exciting appointment for the Club, and I think David’s track record at his former clubs speaks for itself.

“His passion and enthusiasm for youth development and working with our young footballers is evident and I know how much they and our coaches will benefit from his experience and expertise.”
