Caernarfon Closing In On Alliance Promotion Dream

Caernarfon Town moved a step closer to the Huws Gray Alliance title and promotion with a 4-0 win at Ruthin Town.

Darren Thomas, Danny Brookwell and Jamie Breese scored first half goals to put the Cofis in control and Breese added the fourth after 57 minutes.

Caernarfon are now seven points clear at the top with three away fixtures play, against Caersws, Gresford Athletic and Llandudno Junction.

The three clubs immediately behind Caernarfon cannot catch the leaders, but Denbigh Town, Holyhead Town and Porthmadog still have enough games in hand to close the gap.

The Cofis’ long held ambition of returning to the Welsh Premier League received a boost on Friday when it was announced the club have been awarded the FAW’s Domestic Licence for next season.

They will be promoted if they win the Alliance title.

The only goal of the game was scored by Tomos Clarke, who fired home from a penalty during the second half.

In a quarter-final tie Gresford Athletic held a 1-0 advantage at Penrhyncoch thanks to a Mike Latham free-kick halfway through the first half.

Latham made it 2-0 on the hour and the striker clinched Gresford’s place in the semi-finals with his third five minutes from time.

Llandudno Junction are back in the Huws Gray Alliance Cup despite losing their quarter-final 7-0 against Rhyl.

James Murphy led the way with five goals, while Tom Hartley and Alun Webb were the other scorers.

Rhyl were later eliminated from the competition after being found guilty of fielding an ineligible player.

There are two Alliance away fixtures left for Rhyl to complete their season and they are against Airbus Broughton and Denbigh Town on Wednesday, April 14.

Webb has signed for Swedish Second Division club Gallivare Malmbergets on loan and has committed until November. The Swedish season has just started.
