Caernarfon Hit Sweet 21 In Quest For Alliance Title

Caernarfon Town extended their unbeaten Huws Gray Alliance run to 21 matches thanks to a gutsy team performance against Holywell Town at Halkyn Road.

The Cofis had a player sent off and lost goalkeeper Alex Ramsey to an injury, but battled to a 1-1 draw.

Holywell are among the biggest threats to Caernarfon in their quest for the Huws Gray Alliance title, but the league leaders stayed on course for success.

Caernarfon showed they have the team spirit to come through major tests of character and they are on course to win a second Alliance title in three seasons.

They were without Joe Williams and Gareth Edwards for a crucial match. Manager Sean Eardley moved midfield player Jamie Crowther to full-back with Clive Williams joining Rhys Roberts at the heart of the defence.

The match began at a good pace as both sides got out of the blocks brightly, although much of the action was confined to midfield, where Kevin Roberts and Nathan Craig looked well paired against their Holywell counterparts.

Darren Thomas was looking sharp as he worked in the pockets of space around the penalty area and a moment of magic in the 15th minute almost saw the visitors go ahead.

There seemed little danger to the Wellmen when Thomas chased a lost cause on the right flank touchline, but he kept the ball in play and ran past two defenders before firing a low cross that bounced across goal and just evaded the lunge of onrushing Jamie Breese.

Steve Thomas went close for Holywell after 21 minutes when he fired a fierce shot against a post.

Caernarfon went ahead just before half-time when Darren Thomas scored from 10 yards after good work by Gareth Evans.

It was almost 2-0 when the Wellmen struggled to deal with a Thomas corner and two close range Jamie Crowther efforts were cleared off the home line courtesy of some brave last gasp defending.

The flow of the match turned Holywell’s way in the 78th minute following an incident involving Caernarfon goalkeeper Ramsay, who suffered an injury when reaching for a high cross.

Ramsey stayed down and play carried on before, with the ball running loose outside the Caernarfon area, Gareth Evans lunged into a tackle which referee Ashley Jones judged to be dangerous. Evans was sent off for the challenge.

Ramsay was also forced off because of his injury and his number two, Liam Jones, was given the opportunity to shine as he replaced the experienced keeper.

Hosts Holywell piled on the pressure and they were rewarded when Crowther brought down Sam Jones in the box and he picked himself up to level the score from the resulting penalty.

Holywell sensed the chance of victory and thought they had produced the winner in the dying seconds when Phil Lloyd met a deep cross to the far post. Jones produced a wonderful save to turn the ball off target.
