Rosie Eccles Beaten In ‘Dogfight’ At European Games

Rosie Eccles lost a tough contest against Grainne Walsh at the European Games in what her Irish opponent described as a dogfight.

Wales’ Commonwealth Games silver medallist was beaten 4-1 on the judges’ scorecards in her welterweight (-69kg) bout in Minsk.

The Chepstow fighter, competing for Team GB with fellow Welshwoman Lauren Price, edged the first round.

But Walsh took the next two rounds to triumph after a fierce physical battle.

“It’s always a tough fight with GB and I’ve fought that girl before and it was another close decision,” said Walsh.

“All the people in my weight are up there at world level so there’s no easy draw. I’m just happy to get the first one done. She was very tough, very physical, it was a great scrap, a proper dogfight and I’m delighted with the win.”
