Blaenrhondda AFC finished their 2017-18 season on a double high – and left Penydarren BGC’s hopes of winning league and cup in tatters.

Penydarren enjoyed a magnificent season and earned their number one prize, winning the South Wales Alliance Premier title and gaining promotion, but Blaenrhondda had the final word.

They defeated Penydarren 2-1 in the W John Owen Cup final at Cambrian Lakeside Academy.

Stevie Jones and Huw Bowtell scored Blaenrhondda’s goals to spar league and cup double celebrations.

They maintained an unbeaten record in winning the Highadmit Alliance Division Two title, winning 29 matches and drawing one, scoring 111 goals and conceding 24.

Blaenrhondda defeated three Premier Division clubs – Ynyshir Albions 3-0, Cwm Welfare 2-1 and Caerphilly Athletic 4-2 – on their way to the Owen Cup final, while Penydarren won against AFC Butetown, Merthyr Saints and Clwb Cymric.

Pen have enjoyed an astonishing season overall, winning their Alliance title plus reaching the JD Sports Welsh Cup quarter-final and the FAW Trophy semi-finals.

They were inaugural winners of the Owen Cup in 2015-16, beating then Premier Division champions Trefelin BGC. Cardiff Draconians defeated Ynyshir Albions to complete an Alliance title and cup double a year ago.

Stevie Jones was Blaenrhondda’s leading scorer and supporters player of the year, while Luke Evans won the players’ player award.

Overall player of the year is Luke Jones.
