Shawn McCoulsky is fast earning a reputation as a ‘super sub’ at Newport County after once again coming off the bench and scoring.

The 20-year-old striker made it seven goals in 11 games since joining on loan from Bristol City this season as he scored five minutes after coming on to salvage a point against Mansfield Town last weekend to keep his side in sixth place in League Two.

It was the third game in a row that McCoulsky had scored while coming off the bench and manager Michael Flynn admitted he is getting close to having to give him a start. Not that McCoulsky is worried, as long as he is scoring.

“I’m not really bothered if I’m in the starting line-up as long as I’m impacting on the game off the bench. As long as the team is doing well I’m happy to wait for my chance to start,” he said.

“I’m very happy to come off the bench and get a goal. As long as I’m scoring goals it doesn’t matter if I’m not starting.

“It’s all about contributing to the team and getting results like this. You see more when you are on the bench and you know what to do when you come on.”

Newport County boss Michael Flynn is awash with goals this season from his front runners with Padroig Amond on six and Frank Nouble on five. And next month he will have the experience of new signing Paul Hayes to throw into his attacking mix.

“Frank was virtually unplayable against Mansfield and I thought Shawn was outstanding when he came on. He’s knocking on the door for a start now,” said Flynn.

“I’ve told him the reasons why he hasn’t been starting, but he’s scoring for fun at the moment. He’s equalled our top scorer from last season and, fair play to the lad, he works hard.”
