Keeper Mitchell Beeney has gone back to Chelsea – just one week after Newport AFC extended his loan deal.
Exiles manager Warren Feeney confirmed Beeney’s loan spell had ended but did not elaborate on the promising stopper’s sudden departure.
The 20-year-old payed four games for County when No 1 Joe Day was injured last month but was on the bench for last Saturday’s game at Exeter.
Feeney, 35, said: “Mitchell Beeney has gone back to Chelsea.
“It’s just something that I decided after the weekend and he’s away back to Chelsea.”
Beeney’s departure comes just days after his partner, Harriet Barker, tweeted about him being on the bench at Exeter.
She tweeted: ”Kept Mitchell Beeney on loan till end of season just to be a bench boy? #pointless”.
Feeney has spoken glowingly about Beeney when his loan extension until mid-April was revealed last Thursday.
The County boss said: “I’m delighted that Mitchell has chosen to extend his stay with us. I am very pleased to have him on board.
“The whole squad has taken to Mitchell and I want competition for places. I have three very good goalkeepers in the squad at present and I want to keep that competition for places, as it keeps everybody on their toes.
“I have been very impressed with his performances so far. He comes from a very good footballing upbringing at Chelsea and he is a player that I am delighted to have at my disposal.”
Joe Green is likely to take his place on the bench for Saturday’s game with Mansfield Town at Rodney Parade.
