Battling Wales Beaten In World League Semi-Final Clash By Ireland

Wales 1 Ireland 3

Wales hopes of qualifying for the World League Rd 2 final were dashed after losing to hosts Ireland in the semi-final.

Gareth Furlong gave Wales the lead with his fifth goal of the competition in 11 minutes.

But Ireland – ranked 24 places above Wales in 10th in the world – proved too strong at Stormont despite a brave effort.

Coach Zak Jones’ side will face Scotland in the 3rd/4th place clash on Sunday.

At stake is a place in the final World Cup qualifying tournament in South Africa in the summer.

Wales beat Scotland in a penalty shoot-out after a 2-2 draw in the Pool B stage.

Furlong’s effort was quickly levelled by Shane O’Donoghue.

Ben Walker then gave Ireland the lead before Neal Glassey sealed the win on 48 minutes.

Wales had a couple of chances through Luke Hawker and Owain Dolan Gray before Ireland saw out the game.
