Barry Town United And Llanelli Town Closing In On Welsh League Glory

Barry Town United supporters have made it clear with their twitter message: “4 to go. There’s no hiding from it – we are almost there.”

Manager Gavin Chesterfield and his team stand top of Welsh League Division One and have been awarded the domestic licence which is needed to qualify for promotion.

If they finish in the top two Barry will go up to Welsh Premier League for 2017-18.

Barry are five points clear at the top, but they still have work to do after suffering a 1-0 defeat at Goytre United in their last fixture.

Haverfordwest County are the only other First Division club who applied for a licence, but they were denied and have also made it clear they don’t want promotion this time.

The news that Barry have been given the green light to go for promotion back to the Welsh Premier is good news for the former top flight champions.

Cardiff Met went up a year ago, pipping Barry for promotion, and have thrived in the Premier and the Vale of Glamorgan club will feel confident they can survive if they take the same step.

Barry are one of 16 clubs across Wales awarded the Football Association of Wales domestic licence.

They joined the 12 existing Welsh Premier sides plus Huws Gray Alliance clubs Prestatyn Town, Caernarfon Town and Flint Town United in being given the go-ahead.

Prestatyn have won the Alliance in March and will take the place vacated by relegated Airbus, while Barry still need points to make sure of the Welsh League title and replace Rhyl, Aberystwyth Town, Cefn Druids or Llandudno.

After eight consecutive wins in away games, Barry were without James Dixon, Jordan Cotterill and Tyrell Webbe at Goytre United when midfield player Scott Jones netted the second half goal in a 1-0 defeat for the leaders at Glanhafod Park.

Three of Barry’s final four fixtures are at Jenner Park, against Risca on Saturday, Goytre United next Tuesday (7.15pm) and Ton Pentre on Saturday, April 29 (2.30pm).

Their remaining away game is at Cambrian and Clydach on Saturday, April 22 (2.30pm).

Admission to Jenner Park fixtures costs £5 per fixture with concessions available for seniors, students and children.

While Barry go for promotion to the Welsh Premier, Llanelli Town are chasing a trophy double.

They are still unbeaten in Division Two and are two points clear of nearest rivals Briton Ferry Llansawel with four games in hand.

Llanelli are also through to the League Cup final where they play Bridgend Street.

Captain Lee Bevan made his 300th appearance for Llanelli in their 3-0 win at West End. Jordan Davies (2) and Lee Trundle scored the goals.

Davies should have completed his hat-trick, but had a penalty saved.

Llanelli had a close call against Pontypridd Town at Ynysangharad Park when they scored twice in the closing minutes to earn a 3-3 draw.

Joe Clarke, Jordan Fellows and Lee Bevan netted the Llanelli goals, while Luke Gullick (2) and James Hill were on target as Ponty opened a 3-1 lead.

The Reds are away on Saturday with a trip to AFC Porth, while on Easter Monday, April 17, they have a re-arranged game at Garden Village (7.30pm).

In their League Cup semi-final against Cerau Ely, Llanelli won 5-1 at Afan Lido’s Marston Stadium.

Caerau Ely defender Vincent Garcia scored an own goal, past his own goalkeeper Scott James, while Jordan Davies (2), Jordon Follows and Luke Jones were the other scorers.

Rameer Outlaw fired a consolation after 77 minutes, but Llanelli won comfortably and now play Bridgend Street in the final on Friday, May 12 (7pm). The match is at Briton Ferry FC.
