Bangor City Relegation Overshadows End Of Welsh Premier League Season

All 12 JD Welsh Premier League clubs kick-off simultaneously tonight (7.30) but the final round of the domestic season is overshadowed by the news of Bangor City’s shock relegation.

The decision not to award the Citizens a Domestic Licence for the 2018/19 season, on the eve of the final weekend, has implications throughout the league.

Connah’s Quay, Carmarthen Town, Bala Town and Cardiff Met or Cefn Druids stand to gain from Bangor’s demotion.

The Nomads, who had been in fierce competition with Bangor all season for the runners-up spot, are now guaranteed a second-place finish thus qualify automatically for Europe.

Carmarthen, relegated themselves a week ago, have now been spared of the drop whilst depending on the outcome of the JD Welsh Cup final next weekend, Bala Town could gain an automatic European spot and confusingly, either Cardiff Met or Cefn Druids could gain a bye to the end of season Europa League play-off final.

Despite finishing the season fourth in the table, Bala will qualify automatically for Europe if Connah’s Quay beat Aberystwyth in the Welsh Cup. Should Aberystwyth win the Welsh Cup, the Lakesiders will go into a four-way play-off with Cardiff Met, Cefn Druids and Barry Town.

Bala complete their regular season fixtures against Bangor City at Maes Tegid tonight, where emotions could be running high with much of the City squad expected to be broken up over the summer.

Connah’s Quay travel to Cefn Druids in the live Sgorio TV game, Druids can leapfrog Cardiff Met and cement an impressive fifth-place finish with a win. Cardiff Met travel to The New Saints need to match Cefn Druids’ result to remain fifth.

In the bottom-half, Carmarthen celebrate their unexpected survival against play-off bound Barry Town at Jenner Park. Welsh Cup finalists Aberystwyth will wrap up their league campaign with a Mid-Wales derby against Newtown, and already-relegated Prestatyn Town entertain Llandudno.
