Akil Shows Wrexham Are On Wright Promotion Track

Wrexham FC know they must return to the Football League. It’s imperative they play in League Two at least – and the Dragons will be welcomed with open arms.

More than 7,100 spectator were at the Racecourse for the Dragons 1-0 win against Chesterfield. That was the best attendance in Vanarama National League football, better than 11 of the 12 matches in League Two and compared favourably with third tier clubs.

Only Sunderland, Luton, Portsmouth and Doncaster attracted higher crowds in League One.

That underlines the potential of a club who are top of National League football and in pole position for a return to club out of non-League football.

The Dragons won 1-0 against Chesterfield at the Racecourse and manager Bryan Hughes said: “It’s a massive victory.

“We knew it going to be difficult against Chesterfield, a big test for us.

“It wasn’t the most entertaining game if I’m being honest, but it was workmanlike. We did what we had to do and when that moment of quality came we took our chance.

“At half-time I spoke to the players and, while we got into some good positions, we were trying to find that killer ball too quickly.

“I briefed them to say it’s not about that. It’s about getting the ball into an area where we have someone to attack it.”

The next test for Wrexham is against title rivals Leyton Orient next Saturday.

Hughes is working alongside former Cardiff City player Brian Flynn, who is Wrexham’s assistant manager.

“It is great to have Brian alongside me,” says Hughes. “That knowledge and experience is why I brought him in. I am a young manager and I need to learn.

“Now it is about Brian and I learning our own qualities and bringing that unified approach together as one and hopefully earn the right performances.”

Wrexham have won five of their last six matches and four from five since Hughes took charge.

Akil Wright’s winner means Wrexham have scored in the second half of all five matches since Hughes took over, despite not yet netting in the first 45.

“All our goals have been in the second half, but that’s testament to the players,” said Hughes. “They are listening to the advice we’re giving them at half-time and trying to implement it. That has paid dividends so far.

“There is going to be a big emphasis on next week’s game with Leyton Orient, but there are still plenty of games to play after that.”

Wright’s headed goal was enough to earn League leaders Wrexham a third consecutive home win as the Dragons defeated Chesterfield 7,106 spectators.

Goalkeeper Rob Lainton, Shaun Pearson and Stuart Beavon all returned to the starting line-up after missing the game at Gateshead, with Christian Dibble and Jason Oswell dropping to the bench and Mark Carrington out injured.

Kieran Kennedy played at right-back with Pearson partnering Jake Lawlor in the middle.

Wright headed Wrexham in front on 62 minutes, heading in from close range after Luke Young’s inch perfect cross.

That was enough to ensure Wrexham earned a third successive 1-0 win at home.
