Adam Says Sorry To Martyrs Players And Supporters

Welsh defender Adam Davies apologised to team-mates and Martyrs fans after their 2-1 defeat against Weymouth at the Bob Lucas Stadium.

The 25-year-old former Llanelli and Hereford FC player has made well over 200 appearances for the Martyrs and is a key player for the EvoStik Southern League team.

Two goals by Brandon Goodship, joint top scorer in Premier Division South alongside Wimborne’s Tobias Holmes on 27, earned home team the Terras their win against a spirited Martyrs.

Yemi Odubade, called up in place of Josh Carmichael, set Goodship up for both of his goals.

Ryan Prosser scored for Merthyr to make it 1-1 after 56 minutes, Goodship’s penalty winner came nine minutes later.

More than 700 spectators watched the match and Merthyr Town looked capable of earning some reward.

Jarrad Wright produced a superbly timed tackle to deny Weymouth with Ben Thomson only five yards from goal after a mazy run, while Prosser, from a Kieran Lewis cross, Lee Lucas both went close for Merthyr.

Goodship fired the Terras in front after 21 minutes after Odubade set him up with a shooting chance 20 yards out.

Merthyr goalkeeper Lewis Webb denied Goodship a second with a superb save after 27 minutes and Weymouth led 1-0 at half-time.

The equaliser came when a deep Owain Jones cross found Prosser and he poked the ball under goalkeeper Tom McHale’s legs just before the hour.

Weymouth’s big break came when Odubade went down in the box under a challenge from Davies and the Terras were awarded a penalty.

Goodship sent Webb the wrong way and hand Weymouth the lead again after 64 minutes.

An off-the-ball incident then infuriated winger Abdulai Bell-Baggie when both he and Lucas were cautioned. Baggie was fortunate to escape further punishment when he caught Lucas soon after.

The 26-year-old Bell-Baggie is a Sierra Leone international who has played fo Tranmere Rovers, Stockport County, Rotherham and Port Vale.

Weymouth then took Bell-Baggie off with Jordan Ngalo replaced Baggie taking over.

Goodship went close to completing a hat-trick late on when he fired wide with just the goalkeeper to beat.

Substitute Iain Traylor fired over the bar for Merthyr, but Weymouth held on for victory.
