Martyrs Stunned By Late Smash ‘N’ Grab Raid At Home

Merthyr Town were victims of an EvoStik Southern League smash and grab raid at their MetCoaches Stadium home.

The Martyrs were leading with less than three minutes left, but Hartley Wintney grabbed two late goals to win 2-1 and snatch the three points.

The visitors from Hampshire were second best for most of the match in front of almost 350 spectators, but they kept battling to the end.

Substitutes Sal Abubakar and Alex Albert were the scorers for Hartley Wintney with the winner coming three minutes into injury time.

Merthyr started brightly and went ahead after seven minutes when Owen Jones beat defender Matthew Drage and crossed to set up a simple finish for Ashley Evans.

Jarrad Wright went close soon after, while the Martyrs were dangerous down the wings with Kerry Morgan, in particular, creating danger.

Goalkeeper Chris Harris made a big reaction save to deny Martyrs after 24 minutes, while Ian Traylor ran clear and was one-on-one with the goalie but failed to find the finish he needed.

Mitchell Parker hit a post for Hartley after home ‘keeper Scott Reed failed to hold on to a Jack French drive. The ball spilled from his grasp, but Parker could not turn it home.
