Adam’s 200th Plus Martyrs’ Number One For Cavan

Merthyr Town scored three goals, earned three points and kept a clean sheet against Basingstoke Town at the Camrose.

Kieran Lewis, Lee Lucas and Ryan Prosser scored in a 3-0 win for the Martyrs on a day when Adam Davies made his 200th appearance for the club.

It was also a big day for 16-year-old Cavan Williams from Merthyr Town’s Development group, a highly-promising young player who was named among the substitutes.

Williams was sent on for Lewis for the last few minutes.

This was a first defeat for Basingstoke since newly-appointed manager Terry Brown returned to the club and the Martyrs were good value for victory.

Ben Wright hit a post when the score was 0-0, while Merthyr were denied when goalkeeper Colm McAdden made a superb save and defender Sam Bayliss threw his body in front of a follow-up shot to keep the ball out.

Lewis scored Merthyr’s first half goal and the visitors led 1-0 at half-time. Lewis went close again soon after the break with McAdden saving.

Basingstoke complained about Merthyr’s second goal, claiming Lucas had shoved Shane Hollamby over before scoring.

The referee waved aside appeals and awarded the goal which put the Martyrs 2-0 ahead.

Prosser finished the game off when a flowing passing move opened up Basingstoke and the big centre-forward touched a low cross into the net at the far post.
