Red Army Turn Out In Force To Back Dragons

Wrexham’s Red Army are heading to Derbyshire and Wrexham manager Sam Ricketts says: “The away following is fantastic. I love it.”

Away end tickets are still selling fast and well over 1,000 Dragons’ fans are making the trip to Chesterfield for the Vanarama National League clash.

Wrexham are intent on earning a fourth successive League win and Ricketts says: “A big attendance ensures there is a real atmosphere at the game. I would never change it.

“But us taking a lot of fans puts more on it for Chesterfield, too. As a player walking out there, if you’ve got a real good atmosphere in the ground then you do lift yourselves.

“It will be a real tough game and we’re going to have to be at our best to earn the result we want.

“It’s a game we’re looking forward to, a really nice ground, good pitch.

“Chesterfield had a difficult start but are certainly on the up now.”

The home team are unbeaten in four matches – three draws and an FA Cup win against AFC Fylde – and are 19th in the table.

Wrexham defender Manny Smith is still out injured, while Shaun Pearson will be assessed tomorrow.

He missed their 2-0 midweek Emirates FA Cup replay win against Harrogate and Ricketts says: “Shaun had played every minute of every game and I just wanted to make sure he is right.

“He had a bit of a niggle, but had it been a final he would have been playing.”

Pearson had been one of two players, along with goalkeeper Rob Lainton, who had a 100 per cent appearance record for Wrexham this season.

Luke Summerfield missed the cup replay and Ricketts said: “He sustained a pull in his groin.

“We are assessing him, a bit like Shaun. I don’t want to risk anything because we do have really good players to come in. He will be back as soon as he can.”

Kevin Roberts was moved from right-back to centre-half to partner the returning Jake Lawlor, while James Jennings played his first game since September 22.

Roberts was outstanding as Wrexham kept a 12th clean sheet of the season and Ricketts said: “He was excellent. As a young lad he was a centre-half and it was probably just because of his height that he was pushed to right-back.

“He wins an awful lot in the air and was excellent in everything he did. On the ball, defending, heading. Excellent.”
