More than 70 of the best young golfers in Wales defied wet and windy conditions to complete the finals of the Ping Welsh Junior Tour at the St Pierre Marriott Hotel and Country Club.
The day marked the culmination of the season long series of competitions in which players earned Junior Tour Order of Merit points to qualify for the Finals, with around 400 players taking part in the five regional events.
Wales Golf Championship Manager David Wilson said: “We had a great finals day at St Pierre, notwithstanding the difficult conditions.
“It was tremendous to see so many talented young players taking part with loads of support from family members. We are very grateful to the club for allowing us the use of the course and for helping us with the organisation of the event.”
The Under 14s age group was won by home club player Harry Paterson with 41 stableford points playing off a handicap of 10; an exceptional score in the conditions.
Following closely behind in second and third were Junior Tour regulars Joe Jones and Jac Roscoe from Pennard and Caernarfon.
Bargoed’s Ryan Williams continued his good year, having already won the Under 12s order of merit he took the Tour Final as well with a score of 65 modified stableford points, the best nine hole score achieved by any player in the Tour this year.
Whitchurch’s Ryan English was second with 60 points and Harry Coombs from The Glamorganshire third with 59.
The Under 10s age category has been keenly contested all season but on this occasion it was Charlie Boys from Clays who came out on top with 62 points, just edging out Wrexham’s Aaron Mohun with 61 and Junior Tour order of merit winner William Pontin coming third with 60.
George Ledsham from Mold made the long trip to St Pierre worthwhile by winning the Under 8s age group with a score of 60 points just ahead of Milford Haven’s Tomas Carlson with 58 and Swansea Bay’s Fallon Sawyers-Grandon with 57.
Wilson added: “The Ping Welsh Junior Tour has been a great success this year with around 400 entries spread across the five regional events all leading up to last weekend’s Tour Final.
“I would like to thank Ping for their invaluable support of the Junior Tour. All at Wales Golf involved with these events look forward to continuing to work with Ping as we further develop the Tour in the future.”
