Wales Slip To Uefa Under-21 Defeat Against Portugal

Uefa Under-21 Championship:

Portugal 2, Wales 0

Wales finished with 10 players in their two-goal defeat against Portugal in Chaves.

Brentford’s Chris Mepham was sent off for a second bookable offence after 82 minutes on a disappointing night for the Welsh team.

They had opened their Championship fixtures with a 3-0 win against Switzerland in Biel, but could not earn any reward against the Portuguese.

Ruben Neves and Goncalo Guedes scored their goals during the first half.

Manager Robert Pages and his Wales team now travel to play Liechtenstein in their next match, on Thursday, October 10, before going into two home fixtures during November.

Romania are top of the Wales group having won against Liechtenstein and Bosnia. They drew 1-1 against Switzerland in the third fixture and have seven points.

The Swiss are second having beaten Bosnia 1-0, drawn against Romania and lost against Wales.

Bosnia, Portugal and Wales each have three points.

The nine group winners plus Italy, who host the finals in 2019, will qualify.

Co-hosts San Marino have to qualify, while Kosovo and Gibraltar are in this competition for the first time. There are 54 teams competing.

The four group runners-up with the best records will go into the play-offs when a pair of two-leg ties will decide the final two qualifiers.
