Welsh Ace Powers Into Rhiwbina PSA Squash Semi-Finals

Welshman Peter Creed powered into the semi-finals of the Rhiwbina PSA $10,000 tournament in Cardiff.

He joins a trio of young English players in the last four.

Caerphilly-born Creed, who plays out of host club Rhiwbina, took on Kuwait’s Ammar Altamimi in a match of contrasting styles.

Altamimi produced a performance full of attacking intent and hit nicks from every angle when he won the second game.

Creed stuck to his game plan, hitting good width and length in a match which lasted 53 minutes.

The ability of Creed to retrieve seemingly lost causes was crucial and he emerged the winner 11-6, 9-11, 11-7, 11-5.

In the semi-finals Creed will play stylish teenager Patrick Rooney, who celebrates his 20th birthday next month and is ranked 104 in the World.

Rhiwbina attracted a capacity attendance of 150 spectators for the quarter-finals and Creed was backed by a partisan crown in his match.

Rooney, from St Helens, defeated Spain’s Carlos Cornes, who was the third seed, in five games, winning 9-11, 11-7, 11-2, 9-11, 11-4 in 55 minutes.

The first semi-final on court today (Saturday, 3pm) will be top seed Joshua Masters against qualifier George Parker, a 21-year-old who plays out of the West Warwicks Club in the English midlands.

Big-hitting Parker is a former World number 75, but is currently at 170. He has just returned from a lengthy ban and worked hard to keep his emotions in check.

That game will be followed by Rooney v Creed, the World number 63 who will have a lot of support at Rhiwbina Squash Club.
