Merthyr Town are two matches away from earning a place in the Vanarama National League.
The Martyrs face a massive Southern League play-offs home match on Wednesday, when Hitchin are the visitors to Penydarren Park (7.45pm).
The winners will qualify for a Premier Division final against Leamington FC or Slough Town when the team who come out on top will be promoted to National League South or North, the sixth tier of English football.
They will take their place alongside Southern League champions Chippenham Town in the National League.
Up to 1,000 spectators are expected at Merthyr’s Loadlok Community Stadium on Wednesday and manager Gavin Williams says: “We drew against Hitchin home and away and it’s going to be a tough match.
“I’m experienced enough to know that in a play-off semi-final form goes out of the window. The team that handles the pressure and doesn’t make mistakes will have an edge and those factors will win or lose us the game.”
The Martyrs won 4-0 against Hayes and Yeading in their final League match of the season when all four goals were scored in a 15-minute spell during the second half.
“We were quite poor before half-time and had to up the tempo,” says Williams. “We had a lot of possession without hurting Hayes. In the second half it became a totally different game.
“During Wednesday’s play-off match we need to produce that second half performance over 90 minutes.
“The lads have been fantastic all season. Our points tally of 89 would win a League title in nine out of 10 season, but this time there were two better teams than us and champions Chippenham did a fantastic job to finish on 103.
“Now we are focused on the job we have ahead of us against Hitchin.”
Williams will hope to have Scott Hancock, Curtis McDonald and Ian Traylor fit after recovering from injuries, while Jack Compton will challenge for a place in the starting line-up after being among the substitutes against Hayes.
