Cardiff-Born Tesni Evans has swept into the last 16 at the World Women’s Squash Championships at El Gouna, Egypt.

Evans defeated former World number one Rachel Grinham (Australia) 11-6, 11-5, 11-7 in the first round of the main draw.

It was an outstanding victory for Wales ace Evans, who has earned a second round clash with reigning World champion and World number one Nour El Sherbini, who took only 25 minutes to win her first match and lost only 12 points.

Sherbini, 21, is one of the most exciting players of the 2016-2017 squash season, the youngest ever women’s world champion after beating England’s Laura Massaro in the Malaysian-based final.

The record was previously held by New Zealand’s Susan Devoy, who won in 1985.

Right-handed Sherbini was born in Alexandria, Egypt and plays out of the Smouha Club.

Evans will relish her chance to take on Sherbini in the last 16 and the clash is scheduled for Sunday.

Wales are competing in the European Under-19 Championships in Lisboa, Portugal, starting on Saturday, April 8.

Andrew Evans, Tesni’s father, is the team coach, and the players involved are Elliott Morris-Devred, Dan Christopher, Jordan Williams, Ciara Richards, Megan Thomas.

The Welsh senior teams compete in their European Championships from Sunday, April 26.

Helsinki, Finland is the host city and former British Open champion David Evans is the Wales team coach.

Joel Makin, Peter Creed, Emyr Evans, David Haley and Morris-Devred are in the men’s team, while women’s line-up is Tesni Evans, Deon Saffery, Jenny Haley and Lowri Roberts.
