Merthyr Town’s Race Against Time To Sign A New Striker

Merthyr Town manager Gavin Williams is working to sign a new striker before Thursday’s Southern League registration deadline.

The Martyrs have lost Kayne McLaggon and Ryan Prosser to injuries and Williams badly needs to strengthen his squad.

McLaggon suffered a fractured cheekbone at Chippenham Town and has had an operation, while Prosser will be out for another couple of weeks with a back problem.

The visitors to Merthyr’s LoadLok Community Stadium are second from bottom Cambridge City in a game which Williams and his team need to win to hold off the challenge of Banbury United for the final Premier Division play-off place.

Banbury are away against inconsistent Stratford Town and if they fail to win that would be a bonus for Merthyr.

Cambridge City have spent all but the early days of the season in the relegation zone, although the appointment of new manager Robbie Nightingale at the end of November after a run of 15 games without a win did produce an initial improvement.

That started with a 1-0 win over the Martyrs in his first game.

Cambridge City have scored only 37 league goals this season and that is the worst record in the division.

Keyon Reffell misses the match because he will be serving the second of his three-match suspension.

Sponsors of the game are Morgan Financial Solutions who are also joint match ball sponsors along with Mazars of Cardiff.

Match Mascots are Katie-Marie Fitzgerald and Gruffydd Newman.

The match programme, price £2.00 includes an article by Kevin Rye who, with Supporters Direct was involved in setting up of the new Merthyr Town as well as working with Cambridge City in their own darkest days.

Also, there is a report on the recent Literacy Festival with contributions from Primary School children providing ‘pen pics’ of Martyrs legend Dai Webley.
