Sale Of The Year – More Than 60 Teams Run 207 Miles From Caernarfon To Cardiff In Welsh Castles Relay

Six Welsh clubs finished in the top 10 after the gruelling 200-plus miles Welsh Castles Relay from Caernarfon to Cardiff.

Pontypridd Roadents, Aberdare Valley, Les Croupiers, Parc Bryn Bach, Bridgend and Neath all completed the course from North Wales to South Wales in less than 23 hours.

There were 64 clubs competing including Right To Movement from Palestine, aiming to raise awareness of the human rights situation in their occupied homeland.

Eleven competitors from the Right to Movement Palestine sports organisation were joined by supporters and Palestinians living in Britain.

There were 20 stages including six official mountain climbs on the staggered relay race course, held mainly on the road with many hills and mountains en route from Caernarfon to Cardiff.

Sale Harriers emerged winners and were the only team to finish in under 20 hours with their time of 19-41-55.

Team ReAssure finished 64th in just over 29 hours and their team message was: “Thank you to everybody involved @wcrelay for another excellent weekend.

“We cannot thank you organisers Les Croupiers enough for all the support of us as a new team.

“Team Reassure appreciate just how difficult it is to organise, administer and run such an event and hope you will have us back next year. “The welcome and atmosphere has been inspiring for all our runners who took part, to such an extent that we have an excited running community at ReAssure who are already planning to come back in 2020.

“What a magnificent event.”

Ealing Eagles wrote: “Another brilliant year at Welsh Castles. It’s such a special event – you really can’t beat it.

“Thank you to all at the Les Croupiers club who work tirelessly behind the scenes and on the front line before, during and after the weekend itself to ensure it is a success.”

Altrincham’s Michael Berks, who finished third on stage 16 (Brecon Canal Basin to Torpantau – 12.5 miles) paid tribute to Les Croupiers’ athlete James Bruce, saying: ”Thanks to the runner who gave me an energy gel with one mile to go.

“Looking at the results it must have been James Bruce. I wanted to find him at the finish to thank him properly, but didn’t get the chance.

“His small act of kindness was just another example of the amazing camaraderie between teams all weekend and was massively appreciated by me. Congratulations to everybody on another amazing weekend.”

Sale earned seven stage wins over the two days with Gareth Raven finishing first on the final leg from Caerphilly to Cardiff.

Sam Aspinall, Phil Robertson, Nathan Harrison, Daniel Kashi, Nigel Martin and Tim Kennedy were the other Sale individual stage winners.

Pontypridd Roadents were runners-up to Sale, while Aberdare Valley third and Cardiff’s Les Croupiers fourth.

Organisers Les Croupiers won the ladies and veterans titles, while Sale added to their open category triumph by being crowned mountain kings.

Lee Aherne from Parc Bryn Bach Running Club won the Jeff Wood award on stage nine, winning in 44-33.

Jeff, a Les Croupiers club founder member, collapsed within yards of the finish of stage one in 1998 and died.

His club remember him in part with WCR ‘Jeff Wood’ Memorial Award, given every year to the first over-50 vet to finish the nominated ‘Jeff Wood stage’ (always a non-mountain stage because Jeff didn’t like hills).

Chorlton’s Steve Curley set the early pace on the 2019 stage one from Caernarfon to Penygroes (9.1 miles), winning in 54-30, while Sale’s Aspinall powered to victory on the Penygroes to Criccieth Castle run, covering the 10.7 miles in 59-19.

The first day was completed after Daniel Birdman (Aberdare Valley) produced a stage record win to cover the 13.1 miles from Llanfair Caereinion to Newtown in 1-10-53.

  1. Great report of Castles, what a weekend it was! Brilliantly organised as always by the team at Les Croupiers.

Is it possible to get the caption on the top photo changed, please? It’s not Colin Caesar of P & D, it’s Kevin Chalke powering his way to 11th on Stage 12.

    Many thanks,
    Simon W.
